Crochet Double
When you crochet using double how do you true up the righ and left edges?
Sometimes the right and left sides are uneven and need to be closed off with a stitch or edging but how do you count the spaces?
If your edges are not matching up from row to row then it sounds like you are having trouble with your turning chains and first & last stitches.
Since the double crochet stitches are tall, the Turning Chain must be counted as a stitch. But if we do that, where do we place that very first stitch of the new row? Do we create a double crochet in that space right next to the chain? The answer is no. If we were to do that it would throw your count off AND bump the edge out a bit.
The basic rule is to skip creating a stitch in that spot and make your first stitch into the next. Then double crochet normally across until you get to the prior row’s Turning Chain; in the top of that turning chain you will make a stitch.

Once you know you’re on track following the rules of Turning Chains your edges should “true” up.
