the big book of knitting
beginner knitting supplies?
I am going to JoAnn Fabrics today to pick up knitting supplies. I have never knitted before in my life – but I have been wanting to do this for a long time, & today is the day LOL.
Aside from a book LOL, I know I should probably start out with bigger needles & thicker yarn, but what else do I need to start out with? I want to get most of my supplies today so that I don’t start a project only to realize I’m missing something.
Any help would be great!
Short answer:
Don’t get too caught up in details … you will likely end up getting lots lof different needles, weights, etc. as you progress but getting started is easy:
Get some #8 or #9 needles and some worsted weight wool in a light color. What the heck is THAT you ask? Just a normal weight of yarn – not too fat, not too thin. Look for brands like “Lion Brand Wool” or “Patons Classic Moreno”.
And for the needles, bamboo or metal? It’s all a matter of choice! Metal is more slippery, bamboo has more grip. There are good and bad points about each. Why not get one of each (an 8 in one, 9 in the other?) and experiment a bit.
I started with Knitting for Dummies but there are lots of good books out there. “Getting Started” and “Teach Yourself Visually” are great how-to series.
